What Does a Lead Surgical Technician Do?

A Lead Surgical Technician plays a crucial role in the operating room by assisting surgeons and other medical professionals during surgical procedures. They are responsible for setting up and organizing surgical instruments, ensuring all equipment is sterile, and maintaining a sterile environment throughout the procedure. The Lead Surgical Technician also supervises and trains other surgical technicians to ensure the smooth operation of the surgical team.

Requirements for the Lead Surgical Technician Position

To be considered for the Lead Surgical Technician position at Bay Regional Medical Center, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Completion of an accredited surgical technician program
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a surgical technician
  • Current certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST)
  • Excellent knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask in a high-pressure environment
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a surgical team

Responsibilities of a Lead Surgical Technician

As a Lead Surgical Technician, your main responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing and organizing surgical instruments and equipment
  • Ensuring all instruments are sterile and ready for use
  • Assisting surgeons during procedures by passing instruments and supplies
  • Maintaining a sterile field throughout the surgery
  • Supervising and training other surgical technicians
  • Providing support to the surgical team as needed
  • Maintaining documentation of procedures and supplies used
  • Ensuring compliance with all safety protocols and infection control measures
